Week 8

what is dialogue

A conservation between 2 or more people.

functions of dialogue

express feeling

giving a message

shows character

information

dialogue communicates facts and information to the audience

it conveys essential exposition

characters will talk about what happened, establishing the storyline

” He should have known better. She’s nice but not blind.Sooner or later, she’s going to dig out those roving eyes of his.”

dialogue reveals character

A character will talk about himself and other people will talk about him.

E.g.

” I’ll be embarrassed to interrupt one once the event has begun”

“Jon would be appalled if we don’t show up on time”

Dialogue establishes relationship between character

friendly

talking in code

personal

informal/casual

once your main characters POV is established, use his dialogue with other

characters to show their differing attitudes on the same subject matter.

this dialogue exchanges creates varied and alternative POVs.

DIffering POVS in turn, sustain the element of CONFLICT between characters

DIalogue comments on the action on screen

Dialogue is used to tie various elements in the script e.g. characters, action, intention, etc.

It is one of the devices that YOU as a writer can use to expand and enlarge your characters.

Dialogue should be used sparingly.

never tell the audience what they can see for themselves

” If you can see it or hear it, don t write it”

MOST IMPORTANT

<<Dialogue is no substitute for action>>

Eavesdropping

Pay attention to the expressions that people use in daily conversations. It’s helpful to get a sense of ‘authentic’ dialogue.

Unintrusive

GENUINELY FAKE

In writing dialogue, remove words that may seem realistic  that don’t contribute to the plot in some way.

Reveal information sparingly

Don’t tell the audience everything up front. Trust them to remember details from the earlier points in the story

Punctuated Dialogue with Action

For ease of comprehension, long periods of dialogue should be broken with action and vice versa

Avoid stereotypes, profanity and slangs.

Cliche stereotyping( widely fixed but oversimplified view)

Profanities( vulgarities/obscene language)

These elements may distract or alienate your viewers.

Read scripts widely

Think about at which point you taken out of the story’s action? Or when did you stop believing in a character? Does the character seem larger than life and how did dialogue help accomplish that?

Punctuate Dialogue Correctly

Take time to learn the basics. Viewers/Readers should feel the impact of your words– not feel lost trying to follow your dialogue.

You’ve got to know how to edit what people say without losing any of the spirit.

” A good story was “life, with the dull parts taken out.”-Alfred Hitchcock.

Common mistake: students tend to create radio shows with images

<< Film is a visual medium>>

A screenplay is a story told in pictures.

A lady returns home late from work and finds that her husband who is supposed to look after their kids has not done what she expected

they are still watching TV, their homework undone, the messy takeaway leftovers have been left on the dining table dishes are unwashed and their pet dog has soiled the carpet

use the scenario given and script the dialogue between the couple

You can imagine 2 real life couple your parents , sister

Get 2 people to verbally read the dialogue

Record the reading

POst it to your bog.( using YOutube

people rarely utilize their observation skills full

because we are self centered

people pass through the day with 20%-30% awareness level.

adopt a keen eye

develop a natural sense of curiosity

an observed event, subjected to simple questions, can set up a series of possible events that will develop into a story worth telling.

a couple having a meal yet not talking.. what questions come to mind

what is their relationship

why are they not chatting

how is their relationship? feeling towards each other?

what is their social class based on their attire, manners, speech etc…

what is not said but implied?how can a person communicate his feelings without stating it how can a person communicate his feelings without stating it

Week 3 Notes

conflict

opposition of forces or person

conflict can result internally or externally

very hard to depict internal conflicts

when starting to write concentrate on external conflicts.

conflict is the interaction of opposing ideas interests or wills that creates the plot.

dramatic conflict is the protagonist struggle against something or someone.

man verses:man

system

self

environment

conflict arises when there is change

changes may be major or minor

change is universal and common, change is not always accepted

examples of changes

seasons lives relationships feelings bodies locations technologies

conflict arises when people resist changes

intensity of conflict depends how people change

people must learn to cope with change if they want to survive

plot cannot be constructed without conflict

as your characters attempt to reach their goals they come into conflict with each other

the end of the story when the protagonist and antagonist approach their goals and the conflict rises to generate maximum suspense and excitement

internal conflict/ moral conflict

external conflict/ ill treated by the system

external conflict / lack of money

there has to a clear intro

the audience must feel for him

the cinematic experience is not just your story on paper but the audiences emotional reaction to it

if audience feel nothing or little emotion you would have failed as a storyteller

screenwriter is the storyteller

its people to people

the story has to connect with the audience

connect with the viewers

writers purpose

themselves

his unique vision

highlight the stated issue

drama of the plot

where to look for a story

within yourself

practice observing listening and reading body language of people

figure how to connect your viewers to your characters

write 5 stories of exactly 50 words each, posted to your blog

Week 2,Notes

  • Stories can be defined as a series of events.
Proper format for a screenplay
  • have to be in 3rd person( as if the character is narrating the story)
  • it has to be visual. no details on what the character is thinking leave that for the actor.you have to show more and tell less. Also, make use of  descriptive words to describe the atmosphere and the character etc.think in images.
  • also write in the present tense.
Why this format?
  • this is to ensure that the narration is gripping and gives an immediate feel to the script
  • so that the story unfolds as we read it
What not to do when writing a screenplay
  • Do not engage in Passive writing
  •  Using weak verbs
  • Tells what the character is thinking
  • Increases distance between reader& characters in the story
  • Delayed or non immersion into story world
what to do when writing a screenplay
  • Do not engage in Active writing
  •  Using strong action verbs
  • show characters actions instead of thoughts
  • immediate immersion into story world
  • brings readers and characters together

tips for writing

  • stop procrastinating
  • play with the idea in your head
  • write a short synopsis
  • identify who is the main protagonist
  • think of a title
  • give your character an objective
  • then create obstacles for your main character
  • assume that the character would attain the goal at any cost
regarding inspiration
  • it comes from within
  • preferrably when your in a quiet place
  • handle a writers block with a break
  • always solve problems before sleeping or you might loose your train of thought
ALL FIRST DRAFTS ARE BAD.
  • stories must be credible and relatable
  • most importantly, they must be willing to suspend disbelief ?logic? to understand and appreciate your tall tale (  i am guessing it means your story proves interesting enough that they stop critiquing it and just enjoy the tale)
